A windowsill garden at kindergarten is part of a learning environment that encourages children’s curiosity and observation skills. It broadens their understanding of plants as living organisms and of the conditions they need to grow and develop. It also nurtures a sense of care and the ability to appreciate the beauty of the plants they grow and the results of their work.

When there is snow outside and the first green grass is still a long way off, it is lovely to see fresh greenery on the windowsill! Growing onions is an experiment, a practical activity, an observation diary and the first fresh greens. Nothing is more rewarding than seeing them grow before the children’s eyes. Observing plant growth encourages curiosity and attention to detail. Children learn to appreciate the beauty of the plants they grow and take pride in their work.

The children in the Tsvetik-Semitsvetik senior group experienced the joy of discovery under the guidance of teachers T. V. Tkachenko and E. A. Mashkantseva. Most importantly, we concluded together that we must care for our shared planet Earth and its natural environment: it is the only planet in the solar system where people live.

Responding to children’s interests and community needs, our kindergarten runs City Farmer classes introducing modern urban farming, hydroponic growing, common vegetable crops and how to care for them. Children grow microgreens with their teacher and develop practical crop-care skills. At the end of each class, they record their experiments in an observation diary. Over the school year, they learn to care for the sprouter and understand the entire plant growth cycle, from sowing to harvest.

One of the key aims of the national Education project is to identify, support and develop children’s and young people’s abilities and talents, including early career exploration in preschool. As part of this initiative, our Belchata group at Umka Kindergarten No. 67 runs the City Farmer project. Children experiment with different microgreens and find the process fascinating. Recently, they turned their city farm into a small business. They now explore the professions of urban farmer and agronomist and prepare a business plan for selling what they grow.

Teachers, children and their parents in the senior groups enthusiastically explored the world of plants. Preparatory activities included conversations, games, videos and illustrations. Teachers then worked with children on practical growing activities. The children learned about seeds, soil, lighting, indoor conditions and germinating seeds without soil. While growing radishes, they measured roots with a ruler, kept observation diaries and tasted the results. Several families also grew rocket, radishes, peas and dill at home and kept their own diaries. The City Farm 2.0 system introduced children to the work of an agronomist and the stages of growing plants. In the new school year, teachers and families are continuing to grow microgreens in the groups.

Best wishes, Olga Vladimirovna Azamatova, Head of Kindergarten
